The term “Bungalow” originated in the Bengal region of India. Evolving from a native hut called a bangala. A bangala was described as a comfortable abode with high thatched roofs and overhanging eaves, which shaded the single story house. Bangala gradually became anglicized as Bungalow. In the 1880’s, the term was used to describe summer vacation cottage |
in the United States. Around the turn of the century, the leaders of the Arts & Crafts movement made Bungalows their theme and capitalized on promoting the cozy charms of Bungalow life.
Faddishness was increasing linked to the Bungalow craze and soon the Bungalow was officially regarded as an ideal vehicle for artistic self-expression. The Bungalow’s informal character was conducive to enrichment by the use of comfortable colors and simple natural materials, which where in harmony with natural settings. This set off a “Bungalow Cult” of home owners as well as people who promoted the look. These people even gave spirited testimonials such as the claim that living in a Bungalow style home would produce a healthier, happier family life.
In the United States the historic preservation movement has never been stronger and public interest in the Bungalow has soared. Although Bungalows have been around almost a hundred years, many people are just discovering the wonderful architectural style.
